Schools do the maths – a 75% charger grant now available

Calling all state-funded schools and colleges – you can now claim a 75% government grant for chargers installed at your establishment, which allow staff to charge electric vehicles on the premises. The funds are provided via OZEV, the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, via its workplace charging grant scheme.

For teachers and administrative staff, charging during the school day is the ideal opportunity to refuel an EV. Most staff will leave their vehicles parked at the school for much of the day – so a slow charge at 7kw is the perfect solution. Making charging available to staff will help them to migrate to electric cars for commuting to work, even if they cannot have a charger at home (for example if they rent a flat).

A school can apply for a grant for each charger required, and costs covered include all additional items to do with the installation, such as cabling, mounting chargers in parking spaces etc. The grant is delivered as a voucher code, which an OZEV-registered installer can then claim, once the project is completed.

Schools can choose from a variety of ways to manage their chargers and charging sessions, so that staff pay for the electricity they consume. These software solutions are easy to set up, and practically run themselves so there is no administrative burden for school staff. Chargers may also be useful as schools change their minibuses, giving the option of an electric vehicle with all the savings in emissions and running costs these deliver.

Fitting electric vehicle chargers will also send out several positive messages. Parents and pupils will see you are committed to doing your bit to reduce the organisation’s carbon footprint. For potential employees, and younger staff, your school will also be seen as a progressive organisation.
