EV charging infrastructure upgrade – Barry Council

Barry Town Council started transitioning its vehicle fleet to EV in 2024. The council wanted its first EV chargers to be located in its maintenance depot, located within Barry Cemetery.

Summary

The Full EV surveyed current electrical provision, finding the supply close to maximum demand already. The company project managed a supply upgrade with National Grid, new meter, board installation and fitting of chargers at the depot.

Adding electrical capacity

Liaison with National Grid established that a new supply could be provided from the local network, without major civil engineering work. Their solution was to add a new carrier pole in the cemetery, and bring a new supply to the workshop building.

The installation required installing a meter cabinet, and procuring a new meter and electrical supply from third party companies. At the request of the council’s facilities manager, The Full EV managed the whole process.

Charger installation

The Full EV’s consultancy recommended 7kw AC overnight EV chargers, to meet the duty cycle of the council vehicles.

Chargers were initially installed on a “plug-to-charge” set-up, but with an option for future cloud reporting upgrades.

Is your electrical supply holding back EV charging?

We can help

An initial site survey will determine the spare capacity at the site, and any grid upgrades required. We carry out liaison with National Grid and our network civil engineering partners, to determine the most practical solution. For organisations leasing property, alternatives such as battery-supported charging may be more economical or faster to deploy, compared with a grid upgrade.
